Tips for maximizing apple battery charge

You can take some easy steps to prolong the charge of your Apple Macbook battery portable’s .

Here are some simple settings and steps you can take to get the most out of your MacBook, MacBook Pro 13 inch battery , MacBook Air, iBook G4 or PowerBook G4 battery.

Optimize your battery settings in Energy Saver preferences

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. From the View menu, choose Energy Saver.
  3. Click Show Details.
  4. Choose Battery or Battery Power from the “Settings for” pop-up menu.
  5. Choose Longest or Better Battery Life from the Optimize Energy Settings pop-up menu.

These settings will put the hard disk to sleep whenever possible and reduce the computer’s microprocessor performance in order to maximize its Apple A1175 battery life. Laptop batteries differ from other types of batteries in that they provide a relatively short service life and are expensive to replace. In this article we look at the reasons why these batteries do not last and examine the high replacement cost. We also look into the possibilities of repairing them.

Most of today’s laptop computers are powered with Lithium-ion batteries.(thinkpad t61 battery,thinkpad t40 battery)

Under good conditions, Lithium?ion provides 300 to 500 discharge/charge cycles or 2 to 3 years of service from the time the thinkpad t40 battery leaves the production line. The capacity loss occurs through increased internal resistance caused by cell oxidation. Eventually the resistance reaches a point where the battery can no longer deliver the needed energy although the energy may still be present in the battery. There are no remedies to restore the capacity when worn out. Heating the battery will momentarily improve the performance.

Figure 1: illustrates the recoverable capacity at various storage temperatures and charge levels over one year. Nickel-based chemistries, a chemistry that is also used in laptops, is illustrated on the right column. The capacity loss progresses on a quasi linear scale for the second and third year.

During use, the battery compartment in many laptops rises to about 45°C (113°F). The combination of high charge level and elevated ambient temperature presents an unfavorable condition for the battery. This explains the rather short lifespan of lenovo batteries.

The thinkpad T42 battery is ’smart’, meaning that some form of communications occurs between the battery and user. The definition of ’smart’ varies among manufacturers and regulatory authorities. Some manufacturers call their batteries ’smart’ by simply adding a chip that sets the charger to the correct charge algorithm. The Smart Battery System (SBS) forum states that a ’smart’ battery must provide state-of-charge (SoC) indications.

There are two common architectures of ’smart’ batteries. They consist of the single wire system found on high-end radio communications devices and video camera equipment, and the two-wire system, typically used on laptops. The two-wire system is usually configured as System Management Bus. Because of its common use in laptops, we will focus on the system. Figure 2 shows the layout.

The is based on a two-wire system using a standardized communications protocol. This system lends itself to standardized state-of-charge and state-of-health measurements.

The battery has five or more thinkpad t61 battery connections consisting of the positive and negative battery terminals, thermistor, clock and data. The connections are commonly not marked and attempting to test this type of battery appears complicated. Figure 3 describes the functions of a battery with 6 connections.

The positive and negative battery terminals are commonly located at the outer edges of the connector. The inner contacts accommodate the clock and data. (On a one-wire system, clock and date is combined.) For safety reasons, a separate thermistor wire is brought to the outside. This allows temperature protection if the digital communication is disabled.

Some batteries are equipped with a solid-state switch that is normally in the off position. In such as case, no voltage is present. Connecting the switch control terminal to ground will turn the thinkpad X60 battery on. If this does not work, a proprietary code may be needed to activate the battery.

Once the connection to the battery terminals is established, charging should be possible. If the charge current stops after 30 seconds, a digital code may be required. Some battery manufacturers go as far as to add a defined end-of-life switch. If a preset age, cycle count or capacity is surpassed, the battery stops functioning. When asking why such codes are added, the manufacturers explain that enduring safety can only be guaranteed if the battery is tamper-free and well performing. This makes common sense but the leading motive may be pricing. In the absence of competition, replacement batteries can be sold at a premium price. Newer batteries(Lenovo N100 battery,lenovo N200 battery) are generally more service friendly than older ones.

It is recommended to utilize the thermistor during charge and discharge to protect the battery against over heating. The thermistor can be measured with the Ohmmeter. The most common thermistors are the 10 Kilo Ohm NTC type, which read 10kOhm at 20°C (68°F). NTC stands for negative temperature coefficient, meaning that the resister decreases with rising temperature. A positive temperature coefficient (PCT) will increase the resistance. Warming the battery with your hand may be sufficient to detect a change in resistor value.

The charger reads the battery’s state-of-health and flags those that fall below the set target capacity. For full battery service, a battery analyzer is recommended. Summary

Laptop batteries can be repaired but such work only makes economical sense for smaller operators. The success rate varies with battery type. One must remember that the ’smart’ battery consists of two parts, the chemical cells and the digital circuit. In some cases, the chemical part can be fully restored but the fuel gauge may become inaccurate or other data may get corrupted.

Anyone attempting to repair battery must be aware of some non-compliance in the SBS forum. Unlike other tightly regulated standards, the protocol allows some variations. This may cause problems with existing chargers and the thinkpad T40 battery should be checked for compatibility before use. The need to test and approve the marriage between a specific battery and charger is unfortunate, given the fact that the battery is being promoted as being universal. Ironically, by adding more features to the charger and the battery, the higher are the likelihood of incompatibilities.

Macbook Pro and powerbook G4 battery life

As regular readers will know, I own two notebooks, an original 1GHz 17″ Powerbook and a top of the Sony Vaio Z1. As we all know, the 1GHz 17″ Powerbook is based around a G4.

The PowerBook G4 battery  gets about 2-3 hours of battery life out of my typical use. That’s with the screen turned down to an acceptable level, now DVD drive use and most of the other power saving features switched on. I’ve had better than before now, but only when I’ve gone really offline and only the machine for writing or browsing content, rather than my more usual process of browsing the Internet (which implies wireless connectivity, and more power) and recompiling lots of code.

That’s why I specified the battery time in terms of my, so as not to confuse those readers who will chime in with comments that all timings are wrong…

The Sony Z1 is based around the Centrino set and the Pentium-M mobile CPU, both these components are predecessors to the components built into the new MacBook Pro. This has far more complex power saving systems, such as the ability to switch off (rather than simply not use) the DVD drive, and even to power off the PC Cards, built-in memory stick reader and of course reduce the CPU MHz and power requirements to a very low level.

With the standard HP laptop Battery on the Sony I get about the same period of battery powered usage as the Powerbook. It can be as high as 4 hours, but in the majority of cases a more realistic figure is about 3 hours of my more typical use.

I can slap in a larger A1008 A1012  battery (exactly twice the size and capacity) and that I can get about 6.5 hours mobile use. It does however ruin the look of the laptop, and raise the back by about 3/4 of an inch.

Now just to summarize:
Powerbook G4, 17″battery, standard battery: 2-3 hours
Sony Vaio Z1, standard battery: 2-3 hours

To get 2-3 hours (and more) out of a Powerbook is quite an achievement when you think about the Z1, which is Centrino/Pentium-M based and has a heap of power saving technology. Both are using the battery that came with the machine.

Standard laptop battery, standard machines, more or less equal battery life.

Just in case the point I’m making still isn’t clear, using the Vaio, a notebook using the previous version of ‘low power’ technology that is in the new MacBooks I get the SAME battery life as my G4.

What could I expect out of the new MacBook Pro?

I’d expect about the same as I get from the Vaio, perhaps a modest 10-15% increase based on the newer technology, but that has to be tempered by a combination of other factors, like the fact that this is a first generation item from Apple, and that we’re using newer Dual-Core CPU.

For some reason however we have a bunch of Apple commentators (I refuse to call them fans, since they seem to be doing nothing more than slagging Apple off at the moment) who seem to think that the new PowerBooks should have 5, 6 or 7 hour battery life.

Why?

Hell knows – existing PC laptops get – as my Vaio experience demonstrates, about 2-3, 4 hours tops.

Why would an Apple-built, Intel based laptop somehow defy the laws of physics, common sense and exceed the capabilities of PC laptops that have been made by manufacturers using the technology for years before Apple got to it, somehow exceed by a factor 75% or more the inspiron 6400 battery life of existing Intel based laptops?

There’s a finite amount of power you can squeeze into a battery, and there’s a limit to how much you can reduce the power requirements of a laptop.

From a first generation – and more importantly, at the moment, pre-production Apple Intel notebook I think a time of 4 hours is pretty good. That actually equals, or beats, my Vaio my Dell Latitude D620 Battery Dell Latitude D820 Battery.

While I’d love to see Apple produce a laptop that has a longer battery life, we need to be realistic. It’s going to take Apple a while to get the best out of the hardware, and even if they do improve the battery life, they wont be the first to do so – other PC notebook manufacturers will probably get there first. Apple were one of the first 10 companies to announce a dualcore Yonah laptop battery manufacturer??, so we’re already at the bleeding edge.

Meanwhile, give Apple a break – they enough on their plate right now without people criticising them for matching or beating the battery life of their old laptops and their current competitors.
